Imbolgc or St. Brighid's Day also known as Groundhog day is Feb. 2nd, 2019.
This is usually seen as the day where the light returns to the Earth, as light begins to lengthen as this was a day to start the current harvest season by as the wheel of the year was created in celebration by harvesting food so pagans and tribes would have food throughout the year for the festivals.
Early spring plants were made ready to transplant in the ground, or the early garden like a herb garden. In some areas, this became a public celebration as it had been 13 weeks prior any celebration as the last was considered at time Samhain Or Halloween or start of winter. Imbolgc was not always a St. Brighid festival, but became so in Ireland because she celebrated being able to plant her herbs and so the festival took root, and was a continued celebration of light returning to the earth.
In the Ancient Past, Imbolgc was known as Passing Day. Passing Day was seen as a day to do the washing, if there was fair weather. People would go for a walk as light was noticeable and people would want to come out of their homes a little. Dust and sweep and prepare their homes for a herb garden if they had any desire to do so. Back in those days if you didn't grow your food you didn't have any. People who had grown herbs in midwinter would start to dry them near the hearth and prepare them for medicines or tonics or some such.
Does the Pagan internet or public even wonder what Pagan festivals were like before those Patrons made them "festivals"?
See, this is what our blog and forum is about. Wisdom for those who do.
